Mental health issues can put significant pressure on an individual and their family, therefore, having a larger support network is crucial to help them to overcome these issues and have a brighter future ahead.

In recent years, the industry is becoming more aware of the mental health issues and its importance to someone who is suffering. However, there is still more that needs to be done to provide essential support for employees and their families in their time of need.

Mental health stigma can be a silent killer, and it is having catastrophic effects on people's wellbeing; it is often the reason people lie about how they are feeling, or don't tell anyone that they're struggling.

Hand with sign

Mental health refers to a person’s social, emotional and psychological well-being that has an impact on their way of living. Poor mental health could manifest itself in many ways, from mild anxiety, depression or a mix of both to severe phobias and addictions such as alcoholism.

Mental health issues can occur due to many factors including work or family related stress, financial problems such as debts, caring for a loved one, starting a new family or having a family breakdown. In our sector, stress and depression are some of the most common matters to deal with, but 95% of people in the industry never discuss feeling depressed with a significant other.

The Electrical Industries Charity understands that those who are suffering in silence need support to help them take the first step in overcoming their mental health challenges.

The Charity’s Employee and Family Support Programme offers individuals free private and confidential telephone counselling sessions, career development and transition assistance, debt and legal advice, financial grants and assistance and support for carers.

When life challenges are taking their toll, it is crucial to have a support network around you to ensure that you are not just another number to someone and that you are not alone, because no one deserves to suffer in silence.

It could be anyone around you who is currently suffering from effects of mental health problems and who needs support to help them to get back on their feet. The Electrical Industries Charity is here to help because if you work or have worked in our industry, you will never be alone.
